Private Alcohol Treatment for 65-year-old Male

Joanna* called in to find addiction treatment resources for professionals in Ontario. She wanted to know about private and confidential programs that were going to help her 65-year-old husband struggling with alcohol dependency. Joanne said she had insurance, so we suggested she ask her provider to see if her insurance covers only “hospital facilities” or would allow him to seek other – specifically private – programs.
INSURANCE PROGRAMS
If Joanna’s insurance covers treatment, her husband will most likely attend to Homewood (Guelph) or Bellwood (Scarborough). These programs are the programs in Canada that have “hospital status” and meet the needs of insurance providers.
We also gave Joanna links to private 12 Step, 12 Step Holistic, and non-12 Step treatment programs (see below) if her insurance does not cover her husband’s treatment. We also gave her links for alternatives to standard treatment resources such as private therapy, sober companionship, life coaching, and pharmaceutical intervention.

A private program for men that uses evidence based approaches and includes medically-supervised detoxification, masters-level therapists, on-site recreation (including indoor lap pool), psychiatric assessment, refresher courses (aftercare), online support (aftercare), family program, and couples program. Program lengths are 30, 42, 60, and 90 days while returning alumni have more flexible lengths of stay. Average cost is $15,000 for 30 days. This is an English speaking fee-for-service co-ed treatment program for adults 18+. There are 30, 60, 90 day primary treatment programs with a 10 day maintenance program. They charge $8,000 for 30 days (extensions up to 90 days can happen) and use evidence and best practices models. They want to work with the client and design a treatment program that works best for them. They will help with implementing proper coping strategies in regards to stress. Treatment takes place in a home like environment in a rural area of Quebec. If necessary, clients see a psychiatrist for mental health assessment and treatment, as well as an addiction medicine doctor. Clients need to be sober prior to admission.

PHARMACEUTICAL ALTERNATIVES
We recommend people pursue different methods (e.g. abstinence-based programs or harm-reduction methods) before settling on pharmaceutical alternatives for alcohol treatment. However, if Joanna and her husband chose this route, we recommended her husband go see a counselor at the same time.
Antabuse Drugs
Individuals take these daily. Any alcohol consumption while taking these pills will cause the person to become violently ill.
Sinclair Method
Opiate antagonists – typically naltrexone – are used to block the receptor sites that provide reward to the brain when using alcohol. Individuals do not stop drinking with the method. A person keeps drinking and teaches the brain that there is no reward in using alcohol.
